Winner of the 46th Annual American Concrete Institute Merit Award for Outstanding Concrete Work

Rutgers University Housing Department redesigned the existing asphalt courtyard for the Clothier Dormitory. The design called for new drainage with concrete structures, brick veneer walls, concrete pavers and eco-pavers, concrete sidewalks and landscaping.

The brick veneer walls were supported with reinforced poured in place concrete footings and concrete block in-filled with concrete. The walls were created in a radial pattern from a center point in the plaza. The brick color and mortar color were sampled numerous times to match the existing brick on the building.

The precast concrete pavers were installed in the sitting area and main entrance into the courtyard. You are greeted by engraved bluestone pavers as you walk down the center walk-way that brings you into the sitting area. Eco-pavers were installed along the building edge to allow for faster and more environmentally friendly drainage. The eco-pavers have large lugs that separate the pavers, and the voids were filled with decorative 3/8” stone. The total concrete use in this project was 125 CY.
