Rutgers WWII Memorial
Voorhees Mall
Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
Given as a gift from the Class of 1942, The Rutgers University World War II Memorial Plaza honors the 7,618 men and women of The State University of New Jersey who served in World War II, including the 243 Rutgers alumni who lost their lives during that war.
The Memorial consists of an enclosed, 24-foot paved plaza with beautiful curved stone benches and a rough-cut granite border with the names of Rutgers alumni who died in the war.
Let it Grow built the memorial plaza. To create the setting, excavation and earthwork were done on the site. Concrete footings, foundations, and bench pads were formed, poured, and set for stability. Attractive brick walls were erected. Concrete walkways and asphalt paths were paved, and special eco pavers were installed. For curb work and to border the paths, versatile and upscale Belgium block was used.
Let It Grow installed topsoil and mulch to the extensive plantings of flowering groundcover. All lawn areas were seeded and a state-of-the art irrigation system was designed and installed to support the landscape. Electric was put in and special lighting was brought in to showcase the Memorial at night.
The highlight of the memorial is the “Inside Out” sculpture, which was relocated from its present location in front of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum to the center of the new memorial plaza. A dedication was held upon completion of this special project.
